Top 10 Houseplants for Beginners

Being a beginner plant owner can be pretty daunting; keeping track of watering schedules, worrying about how much light they need, feeding, humidity--- it’s a lot. However, there are some houseplants that are much easier to care for than others, which make them perfect for beginners! We’ve compiled a list of the easiest plants to start out with when you’re just stepping into plan parenthood!

Cactus

This is kind of a no-brainer; cacti are extremely easy to care for. They enjoy warm, dry environments, lots of sun, and require very little water.

Pothos

Another easy care plant is pothos, which is a beautiful, vining plant that comes in an array of varieties; golden, marble queen, and neon pothos are among the most popular. These plants are low maintenance, requiring water only once every 7-10 days and the occasional misting. Pothos can also survive in low to medium light conditions.

Sansevieria (Snake Plant)

Snake plants are loved for their modern and sleek aesthetic and for the fact that they’re nearly impossible to kill. They can adapt in almost any lighting situation, and really only need to be watered once per month in the spring and summer, and even less in the colder months.

Aglaonema

There are many different types of aglaonema, all of them beautifully colored and patterned in their own unique way. Aglaonema need very little light to live, and like to dry out in between waterings so it’s okay if you’re a forgetful waterer.

Spider Plants

Spider plants are some of the most popular houseplants, especially among beginners. This is because they’re so easy to care for, and so unique to look at. These plants enjoy bright, indirect light, and only need to be watered once per week.

Heart Leaf Philodendron

This is another easy care vining houseplant that comes in a few varieties; green, brasil, and micans to name a few. These plants are similar to pothos in that they only need water once every 7-10 days and occasional misting.

Cast Iron

Cast Iron plants are some of the easiest foliage plants to keep alive. They do well in low light conditions, and only require water once the soil is mostly dried out.

Peace Lily

Spathiphyllum Peace Lily is a very common houseplant with full, green foliage and delightful white blooms. This plant is great because it does just fine in low light and it will also tell you when it’s thirsty! When your peace lily needs water, the leaves will appear slightly wilted, but will quickly pop back up once watered!

Monstera

Monstera varieties are coveted for their slitty leaves that ooze tropical vibes! These plants like bright, indirect light and only need water about once per week, but can survive a few extra days without water if you forget!

ZZ Plant

Last but not least, the ZZ Plant. ZZs are gorgeous, waxy and dark green, giving them the nickname “gem plant”. They can survive in low to medium bright light, and like to dry out in between watering's, so you’ll only have to water them once every 7-10 days.
